Half-Blood Blues by Esi Edugyan!!!!!!
I am sad to say that this is one of the nominees I have not gotten around to reading yet. *pout* But thanks to the Chapters flyer in my Globe and Mail on Saturday, I have a 15% off coupon, and it will definitely be going towards Edugyan’s book!
I had an amazing time at Giller Light last night. It was located at The Burroughs (Queen West & Bathurst), which was an amazing venue! The host was John Boylan, or as some of you may know him, Gary Strange on Being Erica. The DJs (Teva Harrison & David Leonard) were rocking the place, until The Roughnotes got on stage and played an awesome show! They were even taking requests from the audience, which had the dance floor packed!
The Bash invites juniors in the publishing industry to partake in the larger gala festivities. Since its inaugural year it has raised nearly $300,000 for the national literacy organization through ticket sales, beverage sales and raffles. The ‘Guess the Giller’ raffle rewards the participant who correctly guesses the winner of the Giller a prize package that includes signed copies of all the short-listed titles
While straining to hear host Jian Ghomeshi on one of the two screens airing the CBC’s broadcast of the Scotiabank Giller Prize Gala was appealing to some, others were perusing the selection of raffle prizes packed with amazing swag from Porter Airline vouchers, to huge collections of novels, to a vinyl record collection of all new artists. I even partook in the fundraising photo booth with all their goofy props, and even though I was unable to eat all the delicious food for the guests, it was very tempting as the mini beef burritos and vegetable samosas passed by on silver platters.
After the winner was announced, as Edugyan got on stage to receive her award, the room fell silent after the loud cheers to congratulate Esi on her big win, to hear her acceptance speech. It was very disappointing that Edugyan’s speech was abruptly cut off by CBC to begin an episode of Homes by Design. After the stream was cut the room was divided into people heading for the door and the rest heading to the bar to refresh their drinks.
I had such a great time, and met a lot of great people. I cannot wait to attend next year, but as a guest! 🙂
