Chip Kidd was another book designer we discussed in class. Chip was the National Design Award winner in 2007 for Communications Design, and is the associate art director at Alfred A. Knopf since 1986.
Here are some of the covers Kidd has created over the years.
Chip has such a unique creativity when it comes to designing books. As much as we say, “You cannot judge a book by it’s cover”, people still do. Designers have to intrigue a reader to pick up the book and get them to take it home, and this definitely works when it comes to Kidd’s design.
We also watched a hilarious YouTube video on Kidd’s process of creating a book cover. He has the audience roaring with laughter throughout the entire 15 minutes. He discusses the highs and lows of having a cover approved by an author.
He even gives comical anecdote about being involved in a store robbery, and being confronted with a book cover he designed.
This video is a must see!! I hope you enjoy it, cause I know I did!
